This project is of a single-family house on the Peninsula of Santa Maria, Mozambique. The existing land, with a total area of 2.84 hectares, has a sandy soil with a strong slope and very dense native vegetation.

This new building intends to blend with nature and maintain a close
relationship with its surroundings. It’s built in natural materials with low environmental impact, resorting as much as possible to local wood.

Conceptually we worked on a set of volumes that are positioned along the natural platforms of the terrain giving special attention the specific views of each living space. Just as the treetops rise through their trunks, so the house and the pedestrian paths that surround it, rise on stakes. In this way the impact of the building in the environment is minimized, the natural movement of the sand is possible and the existing dunes are preserved.

The spaces are programmatically developed in 4 volumes, each one with different dimensions according to their functionality and that are accessed from the wooden stairs and paths. The largest volume, were the common spaces (rooms, kitchen, swimming pool) are housed, is located at the highest level. The other three volumes, equal in scale and very similar in composition, progressively drop in level. These volumes house the 4 suites of the house.

The plot is accessible from Maputo by sea as well as by land through the national road 201 that connects Catembe to Cimbene and that travels north to the northern limit of the Peninsula.
